When the recent writer's strike hit Hollywood, I knew it was going to be uncomfortably long. I knew that it would directly impact my work in television and the typical 2 month hiatus would likely be much longer. I also knew I needed a creative outlet during this time off. First I produced a family-friendly improvised play, which was fun, but I wanted something more.
I've always been a nerd. I love science fiction, comics, toys, art, cartoons, music, and movies. I started playing around with creating some of these ideas I had floating around and integrating them into a fashion line. My earliest projects were just for me. A Lucha Libre Hawaiian shirt and a hoodie that is an ode to Planet of the Apes. But some friends saw the designs and asked where I got them. When I told them I designed them, they suggested I should sell them. So suddenly I am starting up a brand new online fashion store.
I wanted to create a clothing line that would appeal to other nerds like me. I wanted to make stylish and affordable clothing that would let people show off their love of pop culture without looking like a complete dork. The stuff I was making was a nod to the fictious worlds or pop culture touchstones, but carefully designed to not infringe on trademarks or copyright. Plus, who wants to wear a shirt with a big "Marvel" or "Harry Potter" logo on it? I, for one, would rather subtely tip my hat to the stuff I like without blatently promoting some corporate brand.
